We just got what wealth we have out of stocks and into annuities. That was the safest thing I could find. We're also looking into gold and silver if we can afford it. I'm assuming a depression within a year if this keeps up. It's transparently obvious that Trump is engaging in "pump and dump" in the stock market.
It's a good plan you've got there, Gregg. Personally, I feel like if we've gotten to the point where we have to rely on the value of precious metals, then we're probably so far gone as to return to a pre-currency mode of economy (that is, barter never existed in history, and we aren't likely to shift to it now, in my opinion). So that's why I'm not particularly interested in gold, etc. Now, that said, I am absolutely interested in the idea of exchanging the money we have now, which could easily be worthless in the near future, for real value: tools, durable clothing or furniture, possibly seeds, possibly weapons. To my mind, I just can't see our economy continuing on for another 20 years and things being more or less the way that they are now.
I've been putting a library together of "how to do stuff" books. Hunting, trapping, wild foraging, food preservation, woodworking, blacksmithing, coppicing, herbalism, etc. All that good low tech stuff.
Same here. I've added books like this, too. I have a few on field medical treatment, the US Army Survival Manual, etc., just in case things get really, really rough.
This was a super engaging, informative read. You put into words very clearly what we are all thinking and feeling (although no where near as clearly!). I’m from the UK and really trying to keep up with how ordinary people are dealing with all this over there. Subscribed
Well .nice to recognize a rational person not optimistically predicting the obvious , humans in large groups lack morality and the will to not accumulate power and wealth as if it is a means to nirvana . The trail of civilized debris is not long but frequent. Our success by will is our own failure to think not as a caretaker but as an observer of the wonder of life not otherwise known elsewhere.
Good stuff, thanks man.
Thanks much appreciated.
I moved the 401k into bonds back in January, so that's kept the value pretty well in all this, but there's no telling how long that'll last.

All the above, actually. Knowledge, too. My wife is a retired RN.
